The Karangahake Gorge is a spectacular sight to drive through with high mountainsides green with forestry while the Ohinemuri River winds its way beneath, making it a top 100 for NZ must-dos, but top 5 in our books! The tunnels, bridges and historic remnants are even better up close with walking and cycling trails suitable for varied abilities.
Take a short stop or a day hike, and enjoy the native bush, the Victoria Battery that was part of the Martha Mine process. The Owharoa Falls are a lovely spot to recharge or if time is limited, and the Falls Café and Bistro is a must visit when open to the public. In summer, be sure to take your swimming suits for a wonderfully refreshing dip in the cool water!
The Hauraki Rail trail extends from Matamata to Kaiaua (4–5-day ride), and the Waihi to Paeroa extension is a great day ride of 24 kms (6 - 8 hours return) with cafes along the way and cycle hire available.
The Karangahake Gorge main visitor area is a 25-minute drive from Orokawa Bay Retreat. Let your hosts know if you would like us to arrange cycle hire or check open hours of cafes for you.
