The mountain itself, Mauao (Mt Maunganui), is steeped in Maori history and mythology. It is an extinct volcano, and now a very popular walking track, with walks to the summit or around the base.
The once small town is a hive of activity in the Summer with boutique shops and many cafes, restaurants and bars. There are also the hot saltwater pools at the foot of the Mount. It is a great day out and has an urban beach vibe to rival Aussie destinations.
Mt Maunganui is a 1-hour drive from Orokawa Bay Retreat . It can be seen in the distance from the retreat when looking south. At night you can see the lights, a view especially enjoyed from the outdoor hot tub.
