The Coromandel

Orokawa Bay Retreat is situated at the southern end of the stunning Coromandel Peninsula.

Orokawa Bay Retreat is situated at the southern end of the stunning Coromandel Peninsula. Within half an hour, you can be at the untouched Whiritoa Beach swimming in the ocean, strolling along the white sandy beaches or splashing in the estuary. If you want to venture a little further head to Whangamata, home of the annual beach hop, cafes, and a bustling shopping center it’s a 40-minute drive. The Coromandel offers some spectacular visitor experiences with boat, kayak and sailing adventures available. Cathedral Cove is a popular place to take a cruise from and enjoy a stunning coastal vantage.

Hot Water Beach is another destination 1.5 hours away, where visitors can sit in hot salt water on the beach as a result of underwater hot springs. Check the tides if you go as its best visited two hours either side of low-tide. If you arrive at high tide the hot springs will be under water.

Whitianga is 1 hour 50 minutes away and home of scallops (the annual scallop festival is held in September) and more beaches to explore. Head ten minutes North and enjoy a best kept local secret of Luke’s Kitchen, which offers entertainment and great food.

Coromandel Town along the coastal route is 2 hours 20 min away, but a great destination for an overnight getaway to really explore the area. Ziplining at the famous Driving Creek complex is a great family adventure!
