Waihi Beach

Waihi Beach was originally a destination of respite for the Waihi miners to take the sea air and has been a popular local holiday location for New Zealanders ever since.

With views out to Tuhua ( Mayor Island) and a stunning 9km of sandy beach that can be walked the whole distance with the right tide activity, the area also hosts stunning coastal bush walks.

Accessible only by walking or boat, Orokawa Bay is a Pohutukawa lined beach that is worth the 45-minute walk.

Summer season sees the Waihi Beach Lifeguards on duty making it a very safe swimming area between the flags. Surfing lessons are available too.

The village offers a surprisingly upmarket collection of boutique shopping and dining experiences, including the Secret Garden, a Balinese-inspired café, massage provider, Ahu Aromas shop, and cycle hire complex. The Flat White Café is a beachfront destination for meals and weddings.

The Southern end of the beach is Anzac Bay, a shallow inlet that is great for swimming without waves and offers some lovely views and walks too.

The Waihi Beach Sunday Market is open from Labour Weekend to Easter Weekend, from 9am to 1pm.

Waihi Beach is a 15-minute drive from Orokawa Bay Retreat, and makes for a great day trip.
