Waihi – New Zealand’s Heart of Gold

Waihi’s history of over a hundred years lies in gold and silver mining, and the mine remains active today.

The Pit Rim Walk around the area is both a great way to understand the scale of these operations and to encounter Waihi’s iconic imagery including the pump house and Waihi’s township with many cafes to choose from.

Continue the gold tour with a train ride from Goldfields Railway Station, then visit the Gold Discovery Centre for a wonderful tour through the rich history of the area.

A hub for artisans, be sure to visit Laughing Pottery or even book a lesson, and the hand makers will be sure to love Unravelled Knitters.

Waihi is located at the foot of the Coromandel, and the town is a short 8-minute drive away from Orokawa Bay Retreat. There are two supermarkets, restaurants and markets to enjoy.

Wonderfully relaxing, peaceful setting, fabulous place to restore. Loved the hot tub and bird song, and the spectacular sunrise!
